“It was important for this project to have grounding in science, history and conventions of curiosity cabinets.”

Ensorcelled Clepsydra

Naming conventions

Venturing into the linguistic tapestry of the Victorian Era—a period renowned for its blend of enlightenment and eccentricity, science, and the supernatural. By weaving together the historical with the digital, "Shadows" transcends the traditional cabinet of curiosity, offering a unique, immersive experience that bridges the past with the present, the real with the imagined.

Ensorcelled Clepsydra

The video here displays the use of one such grandiose title.

Ensorcelled is to be enchanted or bewitched.

Clepsydra is a water clock; a device that uses the flow of liquid to measure time.

Schlieren Imaging

Visual Process

The journey to create this abstract form from the 4th dimension began with a contemplation on the essence of presence and invisibility. It's a philosophical exploration of how entities can exist alongside us, within our realm, yet remain veiled from our perception. At the heart of this exploration lies Schlieren imaging, a sophisticated optical technique traditionally employed in scientific research to visualize fluid flows, thermal gradients, and pressure variations that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. To research this myself I constructed my own Schlieren imaging setup. This process involved the meticulous arrangement of mirrors, lenses, and light sources to capture the subtle dance of pressure waves as they traverse through space. This then became the base for the creation of Ensorcelled Clepsydra.
